The Dream From Dust: A Memoir of Triumph against all odds

About

Born the ninth of twelve children in a banana plantation in rural southwestern Uganda in a village whose name means “bush,” Lukonge Achilles Musaasizi was not expected to survive infancy, let alone thrive. He did both — and then some. He was raised inside two competing inheritances: his mother’s quiet, unbreakable faith, and his father’s alcoholism, which swallowed the family’s land and dignity by turns.

The Dream From Dust is the true story of a boy from Kisaka village in southwestern Uganda who grew up in the long shadow of a civil war, a father’s violence, and an HIV/AIDS epidemic that claimed nearly half the adults in his home region. It follows Achilles from a childhood marked by poverty, jiggers infestations, a sister’s early death, and a father’s unpredictable rage, through a rural school system that nearly lost him more than once, into a wrongful custody ordeal that threatened to end his education altogether, and finally into a hard-won place at the University, its dorm room he cleaned out with a borrowed broom, and finally into a career spent kneeling beside teenage mothers, orphaned children, and persons with disabilities living with HIV in fishing villages along Lake Victoria that the rest of the world rarely thinks to visit.
Woven through his own story is his mother’s first-hand account of surviving the 1978–79 Uganda–Tanzania War — a testimony of national trauma preserved in her own words before it could be lost.

The book follows Achilles into adulthood as he becomes a social worker serving teenage mothers and children living with HIV in Uganda’s fishing villages, cares for his father through a fatal illness rooted in the very addiction that once terrorized their household, and ultimately founds his own humanitarian organization to give other children the chances he nearly didn’t get.

This is a memoir about the particular alchemy required to turn dust into a dream — not by escaping where you come from, but by planting something in it anyway. It is a story about a mother’s faith, a father’s redemption, a country’s unhealed wounds, and one man’s refusal to wait for better ground before he started building.
Honest, unsentimental, and quietly devastating in turns, The Dream From Dust is for anyone who has ever needed proof that where a life begins is never where it has to end.
